Zachary Ullery
Zachary Ullery was appointed Director of Music in April 2011.
Zachary came to the Cathedral as Assistant Musician in 2008 and was named Associate Musician in 2010. Under his leadership, the Cathedral’s music program for children and youth has grown and matured. The Cathedral’s two choirs for older children and youth have thrived during his tenure. In 2010, the music program was further enhanced by the establishment of an innovative Introduction to Music for younger children as a foundation for entering the Cathedral’s choral program. In addition, since 2008, Zach has served as the principal musician for the Cathedral’s Sunday evening liturgy, Sundays at Six.
Zach served as the Cathedral’s Acting Director of Music following the departure of former Canon for Music, Ned Tipton, who accepted a call to become Minister of Music at St. John’s Cathedral, Los Angeles in August 2010.
A native of Maysville, Kentucky (also the hometown of the late singer Rosemary Clooney), Zachary Ullery graduated summa cum laude from the University of Kentucky in 2004, with the degree of Bachelor of Music in Music Education. In July 2008, he received dual graduate degrees from the University of Kentucky: the Master of Music in Choral Conducting and the Master of Music in Music Education. He has completed advanced studies in the Orff-Schulwerk, a developmental approach to music education for children. From 2001-2008 Zach served as Assistant Organist and Choirmaster at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Lexington, KY. From 2004-2006, he was a member of the faculty and the Director of Choral Activities at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester, KY.
In announcing Zach’s appointment, Dean Fleetwood remarked: “Zach Ullery’s impressive and sensitive leadership during this past year of transition ‘raised the bar’ substantially for the Cathedral’s already superb music program. Zach is a gifted young musician; he’s innovative and imaginative in spirit while remaining deeply respectful of the Anglican tradition. His infectious personality and unpretentious leadership style have served the Cathedral brilliantly. It certainly doesn’t hurt that Zach’s popularity across the generations is fueled by a generous and authentic pastoral heart.”
