Worship is what we do

September 16, 2011

At the American Cathedral in Paris, season upon season, we gather together as a community of seekers to be reminded that the Spirit of God stirs deep within us, deep within the very fabric of life. We gather to be reminded that God knows us each by name and has claimed and held us from the beginning of time. We gather to be reminded that God is always transforming nothingness into a new creation that is holy, precious, and marked by love.

In these scary and soul-snatching times when so much in the world seems broken, we gather in worship to be reminded that God hears our cries and weeps with us. In worship we hear the ancient Word of God still living and speaking to us out of the depths of time and space. We gather together to make ritual, to express the sacred by whatever means we have -- the beauty of language, art, music; the simple grace of the Peace exchanged and the Bread of Life broken. And in our gathering God invites us to a new awareness of our destiny as God’s beloved.

As we gather we are invited to acknowledge who we are, whose we are, and where we are headed. We hear again Sunday upon Sunday that it is our calling to work with God, to walk with God, to serve with God, to weep and rejoice with God as we make the sacred journey into the Full Future of God. It is a vision for a future where the world is renewed and the forces of evil and destruction shall not triumph. Death shall have no power over us. The fragile, torn fabric of our lives shall be made whole and strong. We embrace that vision for the future empowered by God's reckless, extravagant love for each of us.

Worship beckons us into the Future. Worship reminds us that we never need fear the future because God awaits us there.

The Very Reverend Zachary Fleetwood
