The Paris Choral Society was founded in 1994 to bring to the
Paris community outstanding performances of great choral works
at very reasonable prices. The group's musical director
is the Cathedral Canon Precentor, Edward Tipton. The approximately
100 singers are made up of many nationalities - French, American,
English, Russian, Irish, Belgian, and others, and come from
many walks of life - bankers, teachers, lawyers, homemakers,
chefs, students, writers, artists, administrators. Although
amateur, the choir has been recognized by American and French
press as “professional level" (New York Times).
Repertoire includes the Requiems of Mozart, Verdi,
Fauré, and Brahms, masses by Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn,
Dvorak, Puccini and Rossini, and other works such as Mendelssohn's
Elijah, Orff's Carmina Burana, Bernstein's choral
works of Maurice Duruflé, medleys of Irving Berlin
and George Gershwin, and American hymns and spirituals.
In addition, the Paris Choral Society sponsors the annual
December Handel's Messiah Sing-Along (Christmas portion
plus the Hallelujah Chorus), a well-beloved holiday tradition
in Britain and the United States, which has been enthusiastically
adopted by Parisians.
Auditions for new singers are held twice a year, usually
in September and January. For more information on these and
other questions pertaining to the Paris Choral Society, please
